How the bench counts materials
The camp crafting bench starts in the run. Two signs track what you have fed the grinder: a red log icon for Wood and a grey screw icon for Scrap. Guides also call that screw resource Metal. Chopped logs go in the chipper for Wood. Sheet metal, old radios, bolts, and similar junk go in for Scrap.
Scrap symbols on junk are not a 1:1 count. A Fandom crafting note maps them this way: one bolt symbol is 1 Scrap, two symbols are 3, three are 5, and four are 8.
Four recipes are available before you upgrade: Map, Old Bed, Bunny Trap, and the tier 2 bench. You still have to gather the materials.
Reaching bench level 5, on the August 22, 2025 recipe table, costs 81 Scrap, 100 Wood, 2 Cultist Gems, and 1 Gem of the Forest in total across the four upgrades. Add those upgrade rows yourself if a later patch changes one of them. The shortfall calculator on this site can check a single material, not the whole shopping list at once.
Bench upgrades
| Upgrade | Bench required | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting Bench 2 | Level 1 | 5 Wood, 1 Scrap |
| Crafting Bench 3 | Level 2 | 15 Wood, 10 Scrap |
| Crafting Bench 4 | Level 3 | 30 Wood, 20 Scrap, 2 Cultist Gems |
| Crafting Bench 5 | Level 4 | 50 Wood, 50 Scrap, 1 Gem of the Forest |
Cultist Gems come from cultists. The Gem of the Forest is the level 5 gate. Strongholds are a reported place to find fragments of that gem. This table does not set a fragment count, because published counts differ.
Recipes by bench level
Amounts in the last column are how many of that item a run can craft, from the same August 22, 2025 table. Later updates have added gear outside this list. The Workshop anvil is a different station.

What to craft first
Map, then Sundial and Compass, then a bed if you want the day counter to move faster. Bear Traps matter once cultists start. Farm Plot, Crock Pot, and Biofuel Processor are the level 3 set that stops you hunting coal by hand. Rain storage belongs next to the wood pile before a storm wets the logs.
Log Walls are unlimited and expensive. A ring of replanted saplings is the cheaper early delay; cultists get stuck on the grown trees. Shelves are not walls. Cultists can jump them.
